Juvenile killed while crossing road in Mason City

A child was struck by a car and killed Saturday night in Mason City. According to an Iowa State Patrol report, a group of unidentified "kids" were crossing Iowa Highway 122 between South Georgia Avenue and South Jersey Avenue around 9 p.m. when the victim saw a vehicle heading westbound on the roadway and stopped in the middle of the road.

A car driven by Kyle Leedom, 18, of Sheffield, collided with the youngster, causing serious injuries. The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital in Mason City where he or she was pronounced dead. Leedom was not injured in the crash, and police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The Iowa State Patrol and Mason City Police are conducting an investigation into the incident It is unknown at this time whether charges will be filed against Leedom.
