Showers and thunderstorms are moving across Iowa this morning with rainfall rates of up to an inch or more per hour. Totals could reach three inches in the heaviest storms. Pocahontas reported 2.29 inches by 6:30 a.m. Street flooding was occurring. The National Weather Service said the heaviest rains will produce ponding in fields and city streets. Motorists can expect a slower commute with reduced visibility.

Des Moines is included in the area listed by the Weather Service along with Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Jefferson, Carroll, Clarion, Adel, Guthrie Center, Jefferson and Webster City. Showers and scattered storms also are moving toward Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Cloud to ground lightning can be expected, officials said. Up to an inch of rain can be expected in that area by 9 a.m. Additional rainfall will occur throughout the day. Saylorville Lake level was 866.67 feet this morning. The level of the emergency spillway is 884 feet, so the lake now has about 17 feet of storage space at this point. It is expected to drop to 865 feet by tomorrow. Ron Fournier, spokesman with the Rock Island District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said gates at the dam on Friday were allowing 18,900 cubic feet of water per second to leave the lake to accommodate that which is coming downstream from recent rains.
